PONCE INLET, Fla. — A man pulled from the ocean off Ponce Inlet Thursday has died.
The victim was swimming with friends, when something went wrong.
Thursday afternoon, dispatchers received a call just before 2 p.m. of a possible drowning.
Officials said the victim was taken to a coast guard station by Sea Tow in New Smyrna Beach. From there, he went to the hospital.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the man was a mile off shore.
Rescuers said he appeared to be in his 30s and was with several other people on a day cruise.
The boat was a 50-foot-long catamaran sail boat.
They said people were swimming in the ocean when they discovered the man floating face down.
Rescuers said he was in grave condition when they rushed him to shore, and he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Sheriff's Office and New Smyrna Beach police were on scene at the Coast Guard Station Beach Patrol.
The man's identity is unknown.
