Man vandalizes bank ATMs; no money taken

OCOEE, Fla.,None — Someone in Orange County is smashing ATMs. Police in Ocoee said they believe the same man may have smashed a Suntrust ATM twice, then attacked a Bank of America ATM across the street.

Police said they don't think he was after money, and they don't know his motive at this point.

Until they catch the guy, all they know is this is a case of vandalism. Even though he's not taking money, it's still costing plenty.

Surveillance Video: Man smashing SunTrust ATMs

The suspect walked calmly up to the Suntrust Bank on Colonial Drive around 10:30 Monday night. He used a small sledgehammer, and started banging away.

"No idea why. He didn't try taking anything. I'm interested to find out why too," Ocoee Police Det. Brian Satterlee said.

He hit the Suntrust twice in a week. Last Thursday, he hurled a rock at the screen and shattered it. It cost Suntrust $20,000 each time to repair the monitor.

Then the guy drove right next door to the Bank of America and did another $20,000 worth of damage to their ATM.

"It takes a moron. Why would you do it? You don't get anything out of it," bank customer Larri Littrell said.

No money has been stolen. In fact, there's no way to get any money by banging through the computer screen.

Police said they don't know if this is a man motivated by a grudge against banks.

Either way, customers said he needs to find another way to release his energy.

"Go work for Habitat for Humanity, do something constructive, if you need to wield a hammer, you know?" a customer said.

The suspect was seen leaving in a gold or silver Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

Police are also working with other agencies to see if there have been similar acts of vandalism.
