LAKE COUNTY, Fla.,None — The Mascotte City Council has voted down a plan to build a new landfill. The final vote didn't come until early Tuesday morning because so many people showed up to fight the plans.
The council voted unanimously at the end of the six-hour meeting.
Mascotte is $5 million in debt and the landfill would have generated $10 million in fees over the next few years.
WFTV talked to residents after the vote who said they're happy the fight is over.
"I really think a dump is not compatible in our city and it's even silly to consider putting one here. I think the council wasted a lot of time and they should've turned this down before they even walked in the door," said resident Joe Campbell.
Waste Management also tried building a landfill in the same place last year and failed.
