Masked thieves rob bank in Port Orange

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Investigators continue to search for bank robbers who pistol-whipped a bank employee early Thursday morning in Port Orange.

Three masked thieves held up the PNC Bank on Dunlawton Avenue before fleeing the area.

One man, who was described as athletically built, ran in, armed with a silver handgun. He had a red bandanna hanging from his pocket.

Police said he then hit a bank employee over the head with his gun.

“It’s bad, you know,” said resident Tony Piromalli. “This is a quiet community. I mean, the whole city goes to sleep at 11 p.m.  I've been out past midnight. It's like a ghost town."

Police said the suspects escaped with cash and fled southeast from the bank.

Port Orange police surrounded the bank after the robbery and searched the area, but nobody was taken into custody.

Investigators are now looking at surveillance video and images they hope will provide more clues.

The employee hit in the head suffered minor injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Port Orange police.
