Deputies: Attempted traffic stop leads to officer-involved shooting

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Melbourne police said one of their officers shot a person when he was forced to fire into a fleeing vehicle Sunday.

It happened just after midnight behind the Shull Manor Apartments on East University Boulevard.

According to police, the officer had tried to stop the vehicle but the driver headed directly at the officer instead.

That’s when the officer fired his weapon, striking one person in the vehicle.

"Last night, my husband and I were sleeping when we heard, 'Pop, pop pop,' and my husband came to the window and said there was a cop out there and there was a shooting. When I came out, there were three people lying on the floor and bullet casings all over," said resident Crystal White.

Melbourne police have not specified whether the person shot was the driver or a passenger.

They have not identified any suspects or said the condition of the person who was shot.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

Anyone with more information on the incident is asked to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
