New faces in new places at Channel 9

CENTRAL FLORIDA — Changes are underway at Channel 9.

After waking up central Florida news viewers for 17 years, Vanessa Echols is leaving Eyewitness News Daybreak for later newscasts.

In addition to anchoring Eyewitness News at Noon, Echols will co-anchor the 4 p.m. news with Greg Warmoth.

Investigative reporter and anchor Nancy Alvarez will assume Echols’ place at the Daybreak desk, alongside co-anchor Jamie Holmes.

News Director Matt Parcell said the change will allow both anchors to reach new viewers.

“Vanessa has been preparing Central Florida viewers for their days for nearly two decades. It’s time to share her wealth of experience and knowledge in another day part,” Parcell said. “Nancy is a very strong anchor who will continue to bring viewers the latest news and information as they wake up. Her new role will also allow her to continue providing viewers stories they can’t get anywhere but on Eyewitness News through her reporting.”

Echols has been with Channel 9 since 1992. In addition to serving central Florida with her journalistic talents, she has helped hundreds of cancer patients and their families through her charity, Compassionate Hands and Hearts Breast Cancer Outreach.

Alvarez, who has spent most of her career in central Florida, joined the Eyewitness News team in 2010. Her hard-hitting investigations have earned her multiple Emmy nods and brought positive changes to local communities.

Look for Alvarez and Echols in their new roles beginning March 2.
