New luxury hotel planned at Port Canaveral

Dozens of people showed up at Port Canaveral to learn more about plans to build a new luxury hotel.
The Port has about 700 acres it's looking to develop into waterfront retail, dining, hotel and convention space.
People who work in and around Port Canaveral packed the Port Commission room after learning commissioners had been meeting individually and privately with potential developers.
The Port has considered a number of hotel proposals over the years and recently went public with plans to redevelop the restaurant district known as the Cove and turn it into something which rivals Downtown Disney or Universal City Walk.
But local hoteliers are concerned a standalone hotel on publicly owned property would compete with other hotels in the area and might even have an advantage when it comes to attracting port passengers.

Port Authority Chairman Bruce Deardoff said the plans wouldn't affect any business already at the Port.

"I didn't see anything that affected any current leaseholder," said Deardoff.

One Port commissioner said the way the land is developed will be more important than any cruise terminal added to the property.

Workshops on the plan are scheduled for early 2013.
