VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office are reminding residents that they would never call and demand money over the phone.
That may seem like a no-brainer, but investigators said people are falling victim to crooks who call victims while posing as deputies.
A woman in Ormond Beach said she received two calls from men claimed to be captains with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies said. The woman was told she had outstanding traffic citations and owed thousands of dollars in fines, which she needed to settle over the phone. She was even provided a phone number to call, which had a voicemail prompt indicating she’d reached the VCSO. This was a fake.
The woman did not give the crooks money and instead called deputies.
Deputies said if anyone receives a call from a scammer, they should call the non-emergency line at 386-248-1777.
Loser phone scammers will call you pretending to be us, claiming you owe $. Hang up on them & call us! 386-248-1777 https://t.co/ePYdbySngA
