Old Oviedo post office could be renovated into community center

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Leaders in the city of Oviedo will have to make some very expensive decisions soon.

They'll have to decide whether to renovate an old post office into a proposed community center for more than a million dollars, or they can tear it down and start from scratch for $2.5 million.

Through the glass windows of the front door, everything is as the Postal Service left it when it moved out years ago.

The city has a vision for a new community center where the old post office stands.

"We really don't have a community center in Oviedo right now," said Bryan Cobb, Oviedo city manager.

It will cost more than leaders originally thought, from an estimate of half a million dollars to $1.5 million for a renovation.

"The city has funds set aside for the renovation of the post office," Cobb said.

City officials are working a land swap deal that would give them 5 more acres next to the post office.

The center could be built anywhere on that property, and the rest would be turned into park space.

Design and construction would take another two years.
