ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — A firefighter was injured while battling flames that damaged several units at an Orange County apartment complex Saturday night.
Fire rescue crews responded to the Sunbay Apartments near Aloma Avenue and Tangerine Avenue around 8:30 p.m.
Once on scene, firefighters reported seeing flames and black smoke coming from a second story apartment.
Officials say a resident attempted to extinguish the flames himself, but they were too much. The fire appears to have started in the kitchen, and quickly spread into surrounding units, officials say.
Eyewitness News was there when one firefighter was wheeled away from the scene on a stretcher after being injured while battling the flames.
"He said something fell on his head, hit his helmet," explained Jeff Holton, Orange County Fire Rescue assistant chief.
Officials say the firefighter complained of dizziness and was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated. He's expected to be okay.
More than 50 firefighters from Orange County, Winter Park, and Seminole County worked to put out the fire. Officials say the fire was completely extinguished after an hour and a half.
"I didn't see flames, but I saw smoke. It was pretty bad, worse than I thought it would be," said witness Joshua Goodson.
Holton said at least six units were damaged. Roughly a dozen residents will be assisted by the Red Cross.
"(This is) something I've never experienced. I've never, you know, seen something like that," said Goodson.
Officials say the State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the fire.
