Orange County commissioners to vote on Skyplex project

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County commissioners will vote Tuesday on the controversial Skyplex project for International Drive.

The plan includes what's being called the "world's tallest roller coaster" measuring more than 500 feet.

Universal Orlando has been fighting the project, calling it an eyesore.

Universal said Skyplex would not blend in at the International Drive location.  Skyplex developers said they want to be the catalyst for change.

Josh Wallack and his Skyplex team met with each county commissioner to answer last minute questions and make a final one-on-one push for his $500 million Skyplex, boasting the world's tallest roller coaster, a spinning restaurant and anchored by an indoor entertainment complex.

"We believe that the feedback has been positive. We are hopeful that they are going to be looking positive on our project tomorrow," said Wallack.

John McReynolds, who is representing Universal Orlando, met with commissioners, hoping to convince all of them to vote no.

McReynolds said the roller coaster would be visible from Universal Orlando and adversely affect the "immersive experience" of the theme park.

"We don't view the Skyplex as competition at all. We operate on a whole different plane," said McReynolds.

Last month, county planning rejected it by a 4-3 vote.

Commissioners will vote Tuesday afternoon after Skyplex makes its final pitch.

Universal's representative won't say whether he or any other opponents plan to speak.
