ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County school principal has been named 2015 Principal of the Year.
Dr. Angela Murphy-Osborne from Palmetto Elementary School has been awarded the Florida Department of Education’s Principal of Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership.
Murphy-Osborne was among three principals named as finalists. The award recognizes outstanding leaders who have increased student performance, promoted safe learning environments, and established successful partnerships with parents and community members.
In October, Murphy-Osborne was named the district's Principal of the Year after she led Palmetto Elementary from an "F" letter grade to an "A," according to the state grading system.
Murphy-Osborne is in her second year at Palmetto. Previously, she worked at Spring Lake Elementary for more than a decade. Spring Lake Elementary Schools was designated a "Top Performing School" by the district and a Title I Distinguished School by the Florida Department of Education.
"I'm honored and humbled to receive this award. I receive this honor on behalf of my staff, students, parents and community members that worked so hard to close the achievement gap. I want to thank my wonderful parents who gave up so much so my brother and I could go to college. I dedicate this award to my late father who worked for 30 years in the coal mines to ensure we could go to school. He showed us how hard work can pay off. I am also thankful to superintendent Barbara Jenkins, deputy superintendent Jesus Jara, associate superintendent Kathryn Shuler, area superintendent Harold Border and executive area director Diane Gullett who have supported me through this journey," Murphy-Osborne said.
It is Murphy-Osborne’s second time as a state nominee.
