Orange County students receive laptops before starting school

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Central Florida students will head back to class next week, and hundreds of Orange County students will have new laptops to help them succeed.

Channel 9 was there as Orange County Public Schools handed out laptops to students Wednesday.

School officials said the computers will help bring OCPS into the future, and parents shouldn't worry about how their children will use them.

One-by-one, students at Timber Creek High School filed into the media center before the start of class to pick up their newest piece of learning equipment at no cost to them or their families.

“So we do use a portion of our half-penny sales tax to fund technology upgrades to the community and we also use our internal funds as well,” said Mariel Milano, director of Digital Curriculum and Instructional Design at Orange County Public School.

Orange County schools said they'll provide laptops to every student, teacher and administrators at all 19 high schools. Six middle schools and seven elementary schools are set to receive devices as well.

“If you have any questions or concerns, you can just email your teacher about it and it just very easy,” said student Sasha Santiago.

Milano said it is essential to the future of learning in the district.

“We do have access to see what is going on, on their laptops at any time, and so they are still going to be learning that responsibility, but they are still going to have that support,” said Timber Creek High School principal Kelly Paduano.
