ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orange County high school teacher accused of having sex with a student won't be returning to the school after the district decided not to renew his contract.
Edgewater High School teacher Ethan Hickey was charged with sexual battery, lewd or lascivious battery and child abuse in the case.
Hickey was a track and field and cross country coach at the high school, and also taught chemistry. He was arrested in April and bonded out of the Orange County Jail shortly afterward.
According to Hickey's arrest report, the 14-year-old student told investigators that she had 10 to 15 sexual encounters with him in several locations. Hickey said he shared an emotional bond with the student, according to the report.
Police said enough evidence was found on the student's cellphone to charge Hickey. In one text, he allegedly said he would "go to prison forever" after learning that the student had told someone about their relationship.
School district officials told Eyewitness News that Hickey will not have his contract renewed because of the pending charges.
Hickey had been with the district since 2012 and had no issues before the criminal charges. Orlando police said no other victims have come forward.
