Student with ‘pair of scissors’ in backpack prompts police response at Apopka middle school

APOPKA, Fla. — A secure and hold situation was issued Friday at Apopka Memorial Middle School after reports of a student with a weapon on campus.

4:30 p.m. update:

Apopka police confirmed Friday afternoon that a secure and hold situation at Apopka Memorial Middle School has been cleared and lifted.

Officers said they responded to the school after reports of a student who possibly had a weapon on campus.

It was later determined that the student had a “pair of scissors” in their backpack and “there was no weapon on campus.”

There are no reports of any injuries at the middle school, police said.

It’s unclear how the pair of scissors inside the student’s backpack caused the police response at the middle school.

Police in Apopka said a middle school was placed on a hold Friday afternoon after reports of a student with a weapon on campus.

Officers said they were called to Apopka Memorial Middle School after reports of the possibly armed student.

Police said they have made contact with the student and are currently investigating.

Apopka police said the school was placed “on lockdown” as they investigate the situation.

There are no reports of any shootings or injuries.

Orange County Public Schools released a statement saying the school was placed on a “secure and hold” and not on a lockdown.

School officials said the secure and hold status at Apopka Middle School has recently been lifted.
