Driver dies after striking curb, vaulting over wall and into lake near busy Osceola County road

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A driver died after she struck a curb, vaulted over a wall and into a lake near a busy Osceola County road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a 32-year-old Sanford woman was driving southbound on World Drive. For an unknown reason, she failed to stop at the intersection, struck a curb and vaulted over a wall and into a lake.

The woman died at the scene. Her car was later located by a dive team.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Orlando Fire Department dive team had divers in the water near Celebration Boulevard and World Drive.

Traffic lanes were blocked near Celebration High School. The road remained blocked until firefighters are able to recover the submerged car.

Troopers said there have been several crashes at the intersection.

In 1999, three tourists from Massachusetts crashed in the water. Their SUV and bodies were discovered months later. Even back then, crashes at the intersection weren’t unusual.

Now, there’s plenty of signage, traffic signals and a wall that was placed to prevent vehicles from ending up in the water.

Investigators said the Sanford woman was going so fast that she cleared the wall.

“I can just imagine the rate of speed to scale a wall like that,” said Mark Gell, a Celebration resident.
