ORLANDO, Fla. — The son of the founder of Orlando institution Charlie’s Bakery is retiring after 50 years, putting the bakery under ownership outside the family for the first time since it opened in 1971.

The bakery will celebrate its re-grand opening as Charlie’s Bakery & Creamery on Feb. 12, from noon to 4 p.m. under new owner and longtime Orlando resident Tricia Hage.

“We are excited to carry on the rich history and tradition that Charlie’s Bakery has given to the Conway community for 50 years,” Hage said.

Hage said it was always her dream to open an ice cream shop, and she looks forward to combining Charlie’s Bakery’s classic offerings with homemade ice cream.

“We look toward the future with some new additions, traditions and family recipes of our own,” Hage said. “Our family has been a part of this community for over 75 years. The Hage family has been small business owners for generations in the Greater Orlando area and we are excited to carry on that legacy.”

According to the bakery’s website, Charlie Hawks started Charlie’s Gourmet Pastries in October 1971 at the age of 50. He and his wife Mae’s youngest son, Gary, took over the bakery in 1981.

Charlie’s Bakery & Creamery is located at 3213 Curry Ford Road. The shop is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday noon to 8 p.m. Click here for more information.
