2 Universal rides reopen after computer malfunction

ORLANDO, Fla.,None — Universal Studios' Revenge of the Mummy and E.T. Adventure rides reopened Sunday night after park officials said computer glitches stopped the rides and forced riders to be evacuated.

According to Universal officials, a glitch in the computer system caused the indoor Mummy ride to come to a stop. The fire department responded to a call of a possible ride malfunction at Universal Studios just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday. It was originally reported that the ride partially derailed, but later, a Universal spokesman said it never came off the tracks. Fire officials evacuated several riders safely. There were no reports of injuries.

The E.T. ride at Universal Studios also was reported to be having technical difficulties just before 7 p.m., and seven people were evacuated off the ride. There were no injuries in that incident.

It’s not the first time there’s been technical glitches on Universal rides. Three months ago, 11 people got stuck on the E.T. ride because of an unspecified glitch, according to park officials. More than a year ago, the Dudley Do-Right Ripsaw log flume caught on fire with people on board.  No one was hurt, but the ride was closed for a couple of months for repairs.

Universal officials said they are looking into any other possible problems on other rides.
