Orlando man claimed self defense in 911 call after shooting wife, stepson, police say

ORLANDO, Fla. — A 57-year-old man fatally shot his 57-year-old wife and his 26-year-old stepson Thursday afternoon in the family’s home, the Orlando Police Department said.

Rafael Collazo, 15, called 911 shortly before 1:15 p.m. to report that his father, Hector Collazo, shot his mother, Caryn Collazo, and his stepbrother, Zachary Humelsine, at their Lake Champlain Drive home near South Chickasaw Trail and Lee Vista Boulevard, police spokeswoman Michelle Guido said.

Rafael Collazo escaped the home, and minutes later, the gunman also called 911 to report the shooting, Guido said.

Investigators said Hector Collazo claimed he opened fire in self defense after his stepson came at him with a knife.

When police responded to the home, crisis negotiators were able to convince him to peacefully surrender within several minutes, Guido said.

According to an arrest affidavit, Hector Collazo said his stepson and his wife each tried to attack him with a knife, so he shot them both.

The report said detectives found the woman's body lying on the floor in the master bedroom and her son's body lying on the floor in the dining room.

But Rafael Collazo told investigators that earlier in the day, he heard a crash in his parents' bedroom, so he went to investigate the noise, the report said.

Humelsine told him that his father pushed their mother to the floor and slammed the bedroom door closed, the affidavit said.

When the boy knocked on the door and opened it, he told detectives that his mother shouted at him to call 911, but his father said not to, the report said. She told him again to call 911.

The affidavit said Humelsine grabbed a kitchen knife and told his stepbrother to move away from the doorway.

The boy told detectives he heard gunfire and then heard his mother cry out, and he then saw his father point the handgun at his stepson and shoot him multiple times, the report said.

Neighbors told Channel 9 that until recently they had never seen the family have any problems

Even incidents that happened within the past few weeks weren't serious, Manuel Almodovar said.

"I was out here washing my car and I noticed they were shouting at each other," he said. "It was nothing crazy or anything like that, (just) something you see in any relationship."

Hector Collazo was booked into the Orange County Jail on two counts of second-degree murder.
