ORLANDO, Fla. — The city of Orlando has started transitioning trash pickup in parts of the city from twice a week to once every seven days, and residents said the new schedule is causing problems.
“It’s just nasty,” resident Agatha Jaspon said, pointing to her trash can. “Maggots crawling. You don’t want to touch your garbage can and bring it back in.”
Jaspon was used to getting her trash picked up twice a week, but since the city has changed the schedule, she has found herself dealing with numerous pests.
“It’s gross. It’s disgusting. It’s repulsive,” she said.
The city made the change in order to accommodate recycling pickup every week, as opposed to every two weeks.
Resident Russ Levy said his family was already doing its part to recycle, and the change in trash pickup has caused them serious problems.
“My family is a family of five,” he said. “We more than fill up that trash can more than once a week.
I see it as, really, a heavy-handed approach to encourage people to recycle more at the expense of larger families and people already doing their part.”
There were residents, though, who appreciated the change, because it gives them the chance to recycle more often.
City officials encouraged residents to tightly bag their trash to help deal with pests.
