OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla.,None — Osceola County commissioners have approved a $1 million study that will look at a bus rapid transit approach for U.S. 192 from the Florida Turnpike to U.S. 27.
The study would see if the LYNX bus service could become more reliable by using a more efficient service than ordinary bus lines.
A spokesman from LYNX said that $800,000 will come from a federal grant and the county will pay the other $200,000.
In the next several months LYNX will pick a company to conduct the study. If it determines better transit is needed along U.S. 192, street cars or light rail are options.
Creating a better transportation system in Osceola County would prevent the need for more roads and would mean less construction, which would be a relief for Central Florida drivers.
The study would receive input from both bus riders and drivers to see what options for a better transportation system they would like.
“If we need it right now then take care of it,” said LYNX bus rider Steve Jen.
Some residents think the study is a waste of money.
“It could be spent on something for the kids, activities, in other ways,” said Michelle McCarty, a LYNX rider.
It would be years away before any changes would actually take effect.
