OVIEDO, Fla.,None — Police have arrested two teenagers who they say are responsible for setting a car wash on fire near SR 434 and Chapman Road in Oviedo Friday evening.
Oviedo and Seminole County fire crews responded to the abandoned Mystic gas station car wash around 5:00 p.m. Officials say 911 callers reported seeing thick black smoke and two teenagers running from the car wash.
However, the burning car wash was the least of the firefighters’ worries as it stood just 20 feet from the gas pumps. Although the gas station had been closed for at least four months, there was still the chance of fuel underground in the pumps, officials say.
“I was kind of scared on the account that it was next to a gas station. We did not know if there was still gas in the tanks or not,” witness Andy Carbone said.
“It is very likely there is still fuel in the underground tanks,” Oviedo fire chief Lars White said.
Fortunately the fire was knocked down quickly by firefighters.
Shortly after, police detained two teenagers suspected of starting the fire. Officials told WFTV the teens were found with lighters that are believed to have been used to set the fire.
Oviedo police will not release the identities of the juveniles. The two are facing trespassing and arson charges, police say.
