Person breaks into Volusia Mall, steals jewelry, ATM

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Daytona Beach police are searching for the person who broke into the Volusia Mall hours after Hurricane Matthew made landfall last Friday.

The person used their red-colored vehicle to ram Dillard’s overheard doors to create an opening. The person then stole thousands of dollars worth of watches, purses and an ATM.

“They went inside of Dillard's and stole over $30,000 worth Of Michael Kors watches and purses,” said Jimmie Flynt, public information officer with the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Many of the stores were left vacant and boarded up while bracing for the hurricane.

“We have people that try to take advantage of all these situations,” Flynt said.

Police told Channel 9's Michael Springer that there wasn't any money in the ATM and that the suspect ditched it in a dumpster behind a Honey Baked Ham store near the mall.

Eyewitness News learned there was a spike in break-ins after the hurricane. Eyewitness News is working to get the specific numbers.
