Police investigate after rent payments stolen in Cocoa

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Some apartment renters in Brevard County said thieves stole their rent payments, but instead of getting help from management, they got eviction notices.

The thieves stole at least a half dozen checks from a drop box at the Oak Meadows apartment complex in Cocoa, police said.

Residents told WFTV they were the ones who called police and managers at the complex have known about the thefts for weeks.

Anita Broadnax couldn't believe her rent check was stolen from the drop box.

"I said 'You got to be kidding,'" Broadnax said.

She was more shocked Friday when her landlord told her she had five days to pay up again or face eviction.

"I was flabbergasted because I had done it the same way for almost two years," Broadnax said.

At least five other residents had their December rent payments stolen, too. Eyewitness News was there when police showed up to investigate.

Tracy Montanez said she was also threatened with eviction, but the landlord changed her mind.

"When Channel 9 news came out she just called me in there and said, 'No we're not going to give you an eviction,'" Montanez said.

The renters have been told the evictions are on hold while police investigate who took the rent checks. No one from the Oak Meadows apartments would comment on the story.
