LAKELAND, Fla. — A 35-year-old Lakeland man was shot to death Monday night when he answered a knock at his front door, police said.
The shooting was reported at 10:55 p.m. A man with a handgun knocked on the door of Johnathan “Jay” Charles-Pierre’s Castle Way home, the Lakeland Police Department said.
A witness, who was not named, answered the door and found a black man pointing a gun in his face, demanding that he call Charles-Pierre, police said.
Charles-Pierre was armed with a handgun of his own when he came to the door, but the visitor fired before he could react, investigators said.
A single bullet hit Charles-Pierre in the chest, killing him, they said.
The shooter ran to a waiting car, firing several more rounds before fleeing the scene, police said.
There were possibly two other people in the car when it drove away, LPD said.
The car was described as green with four doors.
No other description was given of the vehicle or the shooter.
No other injuries were reported.
Anyone with information on the shooting, the shooter or the car is asked to call Lakeland Detective Stacey Pough at 863-834-8978, or Crime Stoppers at 800-226-8477.
