'Project Pelican' could bring 500 jobs to Port Canaveral

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. — WFTV obtained information about "Project Pelican" in Brevard County Monday.

The international company behind the code name is Gulftainer USA.

The announcement could mean about 500 well-paying jobs just to start, and Gulftainer USA said they will be filled with employees from Brevard County or the central Florida region.

The cargo management operation will be a new venture for Gulftainer USA in the states. It is based in the United Arab Emirates.

Now, the company has a 35-year agreement with Port Canaveral and plans to make a $100-million investment in infrastructure and equipment.

The managing director for Gulftainer said he sees a thriving business at Port Canaveral.

Port CEO John Walsh calls the move a game changer for the port, which is already one of the busiest cruise ports in the world.
