NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A propeller has washed up on a Florida beach near the scene of a fatal small plane crash.
The Jan. 13 crash killed pilot Mihoko Tabata of Japan. No one else was aboard the single-engine Cessna.
Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue says the propeller was found on the beach Monday morning.
According to reports, more than 6 inches of the propeller was found sticking out of the sand. Crews took it to the sheriff's office.
Authorities say Tabata took off from Edgewater. During her flight, she told air traffic controllers in Daytona Beach that she didn't know where she was and wanted to land. The controllers directed her to New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport, then lost contact with Tabata.
Officials with the NTSB said the pilot had over 400 hours of flight time but was not checked out to fly a Cessna by herself.
