Proposal calls for new 10-story hospital, development in Deltona

DELTONA, Fla. — While some commissioners are excited over the proposal of a new 10-story hospital, Deltona residents voiced their concern to Channel 9.

Commissioner Webster Barnaby won't hide his excitement over the proposed plan, which would go up near State Road 472 and Interstate 4.

"We've waited for years for a game-changer for the city of Deltona," said Barnaby.  "This is the perfect location, the perfect place and the perfect time."

Barnaby showed Channel 9 the entrance area of the proposed site, which sits on 148 acres would include retail stores, restaurants and retirement living.

But some residents who live nearby said they want to make sure the development is done right.

Kristoper Beatty told Channel that while he supports development, he's not a fan of its evolving plan.

"It changes each time you hear it, so you just have to regroup and gather your thoughts," he said.

Beatty said the projected height of the hospital, which will still needs state approval, has already changed twice, as well as other buildings proposed closer to his subdivision.

He also believes any changes in elevation could affect flooding, a problem his neighborhood has never had.

"Not to sound juvenile, but we were here first so now it's the city's job to protect our interest as well as develop the community," said Barnaby.
