ORLANDO, Fla. — Three volunteers from the American Red Cross of North and Central Florida have deployed to Washington state to help with wildfire response efforts in the Spokane area.
The volunteers are among more than a dozen Red Cross workers from the region currently responding to disasters across the country, including wildfires, tornadoes and other emergencies in Guam, Texas and Wisconsin.
The Red Cross said the fast-moving wildfires in and around Spokane have burned more than 7,700 acres and remain uncontained. Up to 65,000 people have been forced to evacuate, and early reports indicate more than 700 homes have been destroyed.
The organization said more than 200 disaster responders are deploying to Spokane to provide shelter, meals, emotional support, health services and help replace lost medications for people affected by the fires.
