Roach problem shuts down café at LA Fitness that had legionella

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The café inside the Hunters Creek LA Fitness where Legionella bacteria was found was temporarily shut down due to roaches.

The state shut down the Greenroots Café on Thursday, but it was allowed to reopen the next day.

LA Fitness members still go to work out, despite reports linking it to Legionnaire’s disease.

“As far as working out goes, it’s better than other gyms,” said member Britney Saint Fleur. “They have more things available, like the pool, basketball courts and some of the equipment is very nice.”

Saint Fleur said she comes strictly to work out.

“For health reasons, I wouldn’t really shower or eat here,” she said.

9 Facts about Legionnaires' Disease

An inspector for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation reports finding four dead roaches at the café and six live ones.

Inspectors didn’t find roaches on Friday, but the café had three violations; two intermediate violations and one basic violation.

Saint Fleur plans to keep coming to the gym, but the news has members like Julio Roman reconsidering.

“I was looking at 24 Hour Fitness. I might move over there,” he said. “Yeah, that’s not good, for your health anyway.”

In June, health officials had the gym temporarily close its showers and spa after being linked to two cases of Legionnaires' disease.

The county took those samples before LA Fitness hired a water treatment company to do a deep clean of the spas and showers.

Channel 9 contacted the gym’s corporate office for comment, but has not gotten a response.
