Robber douses Palm Bay clerk with lighter fluid, threatens to set him on fire

PALM BAY, Fla. — Palm Bay police are searching for a man caught on surveillance video walking into a convenience store and dousing the clerk in lighter fluid and threatening to light him on fire if he didn't hand over cash from the register.

Surveillance video shows the man walking in with his face covered, brandishing a lighter. The video then shows the man squirting lighter fluid on the Kangaroo Express clerk before threatening to set him on fire.

Detectives said the clerk complied with the robber, who got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The clerk called 911 about 2:16 a.m. Wednesday to report the robbery at the Kangaroo Express on Babcock Street.

"Yes, hello? This is the Kangaroo  Express  down by Babcock Street. We just got robbed," the clerk tells dispatchers. "He was wearing gloves, and he sprayed me with fuel or something threatened to set me on fire."

The clerk described the robber as a white man, about 6 feet tall, between 170 and 180 pounds. He was wearing a camouflage beanie, sunglasses, a maroon long-sleeve shirt, blue jeans and black gloves.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and can be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000.

The clerk was not injured.
