BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A 31-year-old man is still in the hospital after being shot by the owner of a store he was robbing at gunpoint, police said.
That man, Norrick Hyman, is now a suspect in the armed robbery of the Space Coast Credit Union in Brevard County on Jan. 8.
Hyman was shot by gas station owner Sowann Suy during Tuesday’s armed robbery, police said.
After five armed robberies at his gas station, on Cocoa Boulevard in Cocoa, owner Sowann Suy said he knows it's shoot or be shot.
"If you don't grab the gun, you'll be dead. He pointed the gun at me, and it was very scary. I grabbed my gun and shot him," said Suy.
Hyman was shot several times and tried to flee with the help of two other robbers, but to no avail.
Hyman tried to get away in an SUV stolen from a customer at one of the business’ gas pumps, police said.
"I ain't never see nothing like that in my life," said Wilson Trice, the owner of the SUV.
Suy said he pulled Hyman out of the car, grabbed his gun and forced him to the ground, holding him at gunpoint until police showed up.
Suy said he fired shots at the car as it came toward him in the parking lot, and the driver fled the area.
"We work hard for a living to support our family. All these people, they should work hard for it, not go to anybody's store and rob it. That's not right," Suy said.
Law enforcement said investigators found the car Hyman arrived to the gas station in a short time later in Rockledge with co-suspects DeJuan Wright, 24, and Janisha Smith, 23, inside.
Hyman was connected to the credit union robbery through surveillance video and eyewitness statements, police said.
Shane Cooper, 37, was charged with first-degree aiding and abetting in the commission of a crime. He is accused of driving the getaway car during the credit union robbery.
Wright and Smith were both charged with robbery with a firearm.
Additionally, Wright faces charges of resisting an officer, grand theft of a motor vehicle, driving on a suspended license, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Hyman remained in a hospital and would be arrested and charged once he is released, police said.
