NAVARRE, Fla. — Deputies in the Florida Panhandle fatally shot a man brandishing a samurai sword who wounded a deputy as officers tried to take him into custody, authorities said.
Sheriff's Capt. Bob Johnson in Santa Rosa County said deputies went Thursday evening to a neighborhood near Navarre after a woman called to report that her son was acting violently.
He said deputies tried to subdue the man with non-lethal force with a bean bag gun. In the confrontation, Johnson said, the man struck one of the deputies, Matt Ray, several times. At that point, the captain said, deputies fired multiple shots at the man.
The suspect died. His name wasn't immediately released.
The wounded deputy was taken to a hospital and his condition wasn't immediately available.
