Screams heard in 911 calls in fatal Melbourne mall shooting

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Channel 9 has obtained the 911 calls made from inside the Melbourne Square Mall Saturday when a man shot his wife and killed her boss before turning the gun on himself.

The first call came in at 9:31 a.m. It was followed by another one minutes later in which screams could be heard.

Caller: "Shooting in the mall, shooting in the mall. It's the pizza place."

Dispatcher: "In the food court, sir?"

Caller: "He just shot two or three people."

Police have since identified the shooter as 57-year-old Jose Garcia Rodriguez.

Investigators said Jose Garcia Rodriguez shot his wife, Ida Garcia Rodriguez, injuring her. Her boss, 36-year-old Leonardo Coppola, was shot and killed as he attempted to move her out of the way.

Coppola's family told Channel 9 in a written statement that "he was deeply committed to his family and his community, and the world has lost a beautiful soul. It came as no surprise to us that he died trying to help someone else."
