Seminole Co. schools to vote on new start date due to school's F grade

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Big changes are in store for Seminole County. The school district is typically among the first to head back to class after the summer break, but that's not the case next year.

WFTV found out that one F school is affecting every student and family in the district.

Next week, Seminole County school leaders will have to pick a new start date for next school year.

A spokesperson said it is due to the fact that Hamilton Elementary School received an F grade last spring.

Parent Bianca Davis said, "Just one school falling out of line doesn't really put them at a disadvantage."

The F grade means the district is no longer considered a highly-achieving district and must now comply with state mandates that regulate school calendars.

The district still has options, but the new start date will have to be chosen by the school board next week.

"I would not mind seeing them start with all the other schools. I think they should all start at the same time," said Davis.

The benefit of having an early school start date is that students finish the second grading period before the winter break.

Parents WFTV talked to said they dis not mind.

"I think all counties should be the same thing. When I was growing up, we all started at the same time," said parent Jose Marquez.

The most likely new start date is Aug. 24, 2015, officials said.

Seminole County is still an A school district.

The vote on the new start date is expected on Sept. 23.
