Seminole County combats mosquitoes, tests for bird flu after Hurricane Ian

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Counties across Central Florida have been trying to keep the mosquito problem under control since Hurricane Ian.

Seminole County has released new numbers to show how successful they’ve been, but the county is looking for more than dead mosquitoes.

As floodwaters began to linger in areas like Geneva in Seminole County, they became a breeding ground for mosquitoes. To help combat the pesky bugs, the county began spraying 47,000 acres on the eastern side of the county.

In addition to spraying for mosquitoes, the county is also testing chickens across the county to make sure the mosquitoes aren’t carrying any diseases such as bird flu.

The county said it will continue their mosquito control activity until water levels drop back to normal.
