Seminole County detention deputy accused of relationship with inmate felt ‘manipulated'

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — The former Seminole County Jail detention deputy accused of having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate said she felt manipulated.

In a sworn interview to Internal Affairs after quitting her job, Karli VanKleeck, who also goes by Karli Mathis, admitted to a relationship with inmate Jonathon Golden.

“I've heard I've brought drugs in. I've heard that, ‘Oh, she's going to go join the Aryan brotherhood.' I've heard so many crazy things,” VanKleeck told investigators about the rumors within the jail.

9 Investigates first reported about the internal investigation that determined VanKleeck did bring the inmate contraband by giving him Tylenol.

The bigger focus of the investigation was an 8-page letter found in the inmate’s bunk, in which VanKleeck discussed sexual acts she would like to commit with him and an admission to kissing him.

VanKleeck told investigators the two did not have sex.

The inmate and detention deputy also wrote about VanKleeck getting a sun wheel’ tattoo, which is a variation of a Swastika sometimes used by white supremacist groups.

According to the investigation, Golden has one on his back as well as a Swastika on his chest, but he denies being a member of a supremacist group.

“That was his joke, he was saying, ‘Oh, you’d have to get a sun wheel tattoo to be with me, would you do that?’ and I was like ‘Oh, yeah, sure, I would get one’,” VanKleeck said to investigators.

VanKleeck told investigators she felt manipulated and that she "got wrapped up too far into it."

However, the inmate told investigators the two were in love.
