OVIEDO, Fla. — The latest Vision Zero data reported by Metro Plan Orlando showed a bright spot for road safety in Seminole County. Oviedo is one of just three cities in the county that did not record a deadly crash in 2024. With deadly crashes up county-wide, the city said there’s still work to do.
“One of the things about Vision Zero is you’re striving to have zero fatalities, so it’s amazing we were able to achieve that,” Paul Yearigan, the Assistant Public Works Director for the City of Oviedo, reacted to the data.
The county-wide numbers show why that work isn’t over.
Seminole County saw a 50% increase in deadly crashes in 2024. Serious injury crashes dropped 18.4% between 2018 and 2024. Yearigan said they are looking at how to sustain that progress.
“One of the most challenging roads is Mitchell Hammock Road,” Yearigan said. “It’s a very busy road, there’s a lot of safety issues.”
That road is now in line for several changes.
“We’re going to add lighting along the south side of the road, we’re going to add a raised median down the center,” Yearigan said.
The project also includes an eight-foot sidewalk on the north side with plans to improve pedestrian access and nighttime visibility.
Communications Manager Lisa McDonald said infrastructure is only part of the equation.
They’re also counting on drivers to make safe choices behind the wheel.
“Let the phone go to the wayside while you’re driving,” McDonald said. “Be alert, pay attention to stop lights and stop signs.”
City leaders said the Mitchell Hammock Road improvements are part of a larger effort to address safety and traffic as Oviedo continues to grow.
