Superintendent: District did ‘everything it had to do’ during Oviedo coach investigation

OVIEDO, Fla. — Channel 9 Seminole County reporter Jeff Levkulich caught up with Seminole County Public Schools Superintendent Walt Griffin Thursday to discuss the district’s response to reports of inappropriate touching in the Oviedo High School locker room.

For more than a year, 9 Investigates reported about alleged inappropriate touching by members of the school’s football team.

As a result, the district removed head varsity football coach Matt Dixon and issued him a temporary suspension from the classroom.

Because of potential legal issues that could crop up down the road for the district, the superintendent was limited in what he could say. But he did tell me is that those so-called code red incidents in the locker room are a thing of the past.

“It is behind us,” Griffin said.

Levkulich asked Griffin if more should have been done.

“I think the district did everything it had to do as it found out information,” Griffin said. “I'm very pleased where we landed.”

Griffin says the Oviedo community must now begin to heal. The school has already replaced Dixon as head coach.

“I understand there was a meeting last night where families got to meet the new coach and we are off to a great start,” Griffin said.
