Witness shoots at shoplifting suspect's car as he flees Orange City Walmart

ORANGE CITY, Fla. — Orange City police arrested a man who they said fired a gun at a suspected shoplifter as he drove out of a Walmart parking lot early Wednesday afternoon.

As police led Jose Martinez to an awaiting cruiser, he was asked if he was trying to stop the man.

"Yeah, he put me in danger and other people," said Martinez. "He tried to run me over."

Martinez said he was surprised when police arrested him.

Police said Martinez fired at least five shots from a 9mm handgun.

Several customers called 911.

"We were just leaving the Walmart in the parking lot and we heard five gunshots. A guy was walking up the aisle and shooting at somebody," said one caller to a 911 dispatcher.

Police said Eddie McKee was stealing meat from the store on Saxon Boulevard.

In his haste to leave the store, McKee pushed a woman to the ground, police said.

Eyewitnesses said McKee also smashed into other cars as he drove off.

Police said Martinez told them he fired at the car in order to put bullet holes in it, which would make it easier for them to identify.

McKee was stopped and taken into custody a few miles from the scene.

WFTV's Ryan Hughes checked with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and found no criminal record for Jose Martinez in Florida.

Police said Martinez was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Police said he faces two felony charges of aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

McKee faces retail theft charges.
