Shuttle bus catches fire in rental car lot

ORLANDO, Fla. — Officials said a shuttle bus caught fire in a rental car lot near Orlando International Airport Sunday morning.

The shuttle bus fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. in the Payless Car Rental parking lot on McCoy Road near OIA.

The shuttle bus that caught fire is used to take passengers back and forth between the lot and the airport, according to officials. No one was on the bus at the time of the fire, officials said.

The manager of the business, Dan Ditman, told WFTV the General Motors brand bus wasn't even turned on when the fire started. Ditman said firefighters told him they think the bus' battery sparked the fire and they've responded to similar fires involving GM vehicles. The incident is prompting Ditman to have all his GM buses checked out.

"I know this isn't the first time this has happened, according to the fire department, so really we hope GM steps up, gets the bus fixed and we'll have them inspect the rest of our buses," Ditman said.

The shuttle bus was surrounded by several other buses, but none of them sustained damage during the fire, according to officials.
