Some Orange County residents fed up with temporary business signs

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Some Orange County roads are so littered with temporary signs that a group of residents have had enough.

Those residents want the county to take quicker action in getting the clutter under control.

Channel 9's Racquel Asa asked county leaders why it's going to take months before it can act on recommendations that would solve the problem.

One Windermere man who asked to remain anonymous said he collected 30 signs in 15 minutes in his area.

"And this is typical for a weekday," he said.

The resident said he's fed up with the county coming through and cleaning up only to have the signs put back up.

"I think it's terrible," he said. "It's just trash that pollutes our neighborhood, and it needs to be stopped."

Orange County Code Enforcement said it's doing its best to get the situation under control, filling Dumpsters every week with signs collected from the roadways.

Residents have been working on recommendations with the county since September, which include making penalties stiffer, but diverting more resources isn't possible, officials said.

"We face competing demands and limited resources," said Bob Spivey of Code Enforcement.

Cleaning up foreclosures and neighborhoods like Tymberskan require a lot of time, Channel 9 learned.

Last year, Code Enforcement handled nearly 37,000 calls, with only 200 of them being for sign violations.

"These recommendations that we have been working on may take up to a year to get through the whole list," said Spivey.

"It needs to be (shorter), and it should be 30 days max to get this report done," said the unnamed resident.

Right now, violators who place signs in unmarked area could face fines.

Every year the county collects and disposes 100,000 signs.
