Some Seminole County schools seeing increase in fights breaking out

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — 9 Investigates is digging deeper into an ongoing problem in a Seminole County school that’s putting students and staff in danger.

We’ve told you about a number of fights breaking out at Markham Woods Middle School. So far this year, the sheriff’s office said it has arrested 10 students over the fights.

In 2019, before the pandemic, Markham Woods only had three fights recorded for the year. Last year, that number increased to 31, and they’re on track to surpass that number this year.

According to the district, 25 fights have happened so far this year at the schools. That’s 22 more fights than two years ago and the school year is not even half way over.

Winter Springs, Lyman and Lake Mary high schools as well as Tuskawilla Middle School are on track to surpass the number of fights from the last two years. Lake Howell High School, which had 14 fights two year ago, has had no fights this year.

District spokesman Michael Lawrence said with Markham Woods, there are a lot of unknown variables.

“You don’t know if it’s the result of COVID, kids returning back,” he said. “You don’t know if it’s things going on in the community if they fester, if they are unrelated at all.”

The Sheriff’s Office said there is an extra school resource officer at the Markham Woods campus, as well as juvenile intervention officers to meet with students, families and staff to try and prevent future altercations.

The sheriff’s office and the school board will meet behind closed doors for a safety and security meeting Friday where they plan to address the issues at Markham as well as the Oviedo High School homecoming gun incident.
