• South Daytona police officer nearly run over, investigators say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. - A South Daytona police officer jumped through a suspect's driver side window to grab keys out of the ignition during a traffic stop.

Body camera video revealed Tuesday evening that Frank Wetzel, 61, refused to get out of the Jeep he was driving after he was accused of running a stop sign on Nova Road, investigators said.

In the body camera video, Officer Joshua Mount asked Wetzel what was in an orange container and Wetzel said nothing.

Mount asked Wetzel to get out of the vehicle, but he refused, investigators said.

“I’m not getting out of the car,” Wetzel said.

“Frank, you’re going to get out of the car or I’m going to pull you out of the car,” Mount said.

Moments later, Wetzel started the Jeep and Mount leaped through the window to grab the keys.

Mount eventually grabs the keys, but not before the tires ran over his knee and foot, the officer said. Mount said he will be OK.

Police said they found a stolen gun and machete in the vehicle.

Court records obtained by Eyewitness News revealed Wetzel has been arrested before for resisting arrest.

Wetzel was charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude, possession of a firearm by a felon, resist arrest with violence, carrying a concealed firearm and dealing in stolen property.
