State inmate hit by Brevard deputy's cruiser while waiting to go to work-release job

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A state inmate was injured when he was struck by a deputy's cruiser in Brevard County Thursday morning, authorities said.
Adam Baxter, 24, was hit by a Brevard County Sheriff's Office deputy's cruiser around 5:30 a.m. as he waited to be taken to a work-release job.

Baxter was airlifted with possible injuries to his back and foot.

He's a resident of the Cocoa Bridge Community Release Center on camp road. The facility is located less than a mile from the county jail.

There's no sidewalk along the road, and little room to walk off the roadway.

Norman Mierke said he's been clipped by a vehicle along the road before.

"I'm scared to death every time I walk down this road that some car is going to clip me," area resident Norman Mierke said.

He said he wasn't surprised to learn a Department of Corrections inmate was struck Thursday morning, in the area of Camp Road and Burgess Avenue.

Thursday's accident was the 11th reported accident in that area over the last five years and the only one involving a pedestrian.

Channel 9's Melonie Holt learned that the county has considered sidewalks for the area, but was told there isn't much right of way and that there is not funding available.

"If there's another car coming you have to stop they won't get out of your way. It's a wonder they haven't been hit," resident Harold Beard said.

The speed limit in the area is 25 mph. Both the sheriff's office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating Thursday's accident.

Baxter is currently serving out a sentence for burglary, grand theft, and fraud.

The deputy involved in the accident is still on active duty.
