ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The United States Tennis Association held its official grand opening Thursday in Lake Nona.
The tennis facility has 100 courts and serve as the “Home of American Tennis,” by combing all USTA participation programs and USTA player development in a central location for the first time, officials said.
“This is going to be the hub. This is really going to be the headquarters for our players to come train, push each other and get better,” said former tennis pro Jim Courier.
More than 100 international, national and local events have already been scheduled at the facility this year, officials said.
The tennis center is open to the public.
“What this facility does in Central Florida is offer a viable option for families to come out to a public facility and get started on the small courts,” Courier said. “They can get started with the mini tennis and hopefully fall in love with the sport.”
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the facility will help showcase the city as a premier sports destination.
“Think about having the Golf Channel, 'Wide World of Sports,' now the venues that we have, Camping World Stadium, Amway Center, the soccer stadium, the convention center, there’s nothing we can’t host,” Dyer said.
Nearly 90,000 visitors are expected at the facility.
