Last week, on Rio Grande Avenue in Orlando, a 37-year-old man had a medical episode, hit a curb and went into a retention pond. He died at the hospital.

Seminole County Battalion Chief and Dive Team member Tod Zellers said if you find yourself in a sinking vehicle, remember the acronym SURE:

Stay calm.

Unbuckle your seatbelt while at the same time …

Rolling your window down. Once you have your window down and your seatbelt off …

Exit the vehicle head first and swim toward safety.

Zellers also said to not call 911 while you’re still in the car if it’s sinking. You only have 30 to 60 seconds until the water rises to the bottom of the windows, and you need to use that time to try to get out before calling for help.
