Dog in shelter for 1,350 days seeks home with large yard, lots of tennis balls

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — Ruth has called an animal shelter in Sumter County home for more than half her life.

The 6-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix is looking for her forever home where she can be an only child and enjoy a large yard, preferably with an endless supply of tennis balls.

Staff at YOUR Humane Society SPCA in Lake Panasoffkee said Ruth takes awhile to warm up to new people but enjoys a good head scratch once you get to know each other.

After more than 1,350 days in the shelter, staff said Ruth would do best as a stay-at-home dog with an owner who will understand her needs and quirks.

Her likes: tennis balls, food and treats. Dislikes: crowds, giving up her toys and kids.

“My ideal home has a large fenced-in yard that I can explore on my own, lots of tennis balls, and one (or maybe two) people who will understand that I will be a little bit more like a roommate than a dog,” the shelter posted on Facebook.
