SunRail sees 40% rider increase since 2021 as funding concerns loom

ORLANDO, Fla. — Will SunRail expand? Leaders met this week to discuss expansion opportunities.

SunRail officials reported a 40% increase in riders from 2021.

Other items on the agenda included maintenance and plans to transition to local control and operations.

During the meeting, leaders from Seminole and Osceola counties expressed their concerns with funding.

“Anything we do differently, we’re going to have to come to consensus on,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “I can’t predict what the funding models might be, but I would envision that they’d be very different than the existing models might be. But we’re just at the first couple steps.”

The next meeting for SunRail is scheduled for Aug. 4.
