Thousands missing from Seminole County high school booster account

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Thousands of dollars belonging to a Seminole County high school band is missing from the school's booster account.

Channel 9 learned that parents contributed extra money so the Lyman High School band could make it to the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C.

Booster club members had to find extra money to pay for the trip after the board president discovered thousands of dollars missing. Some parents had already paid for the trip.

The president said she received an invoice from the travel company showing a balance of $30,000.

Further review of the group's account showed a number of questionable transactions.

The report shows that deputies have a person of interest, but the person's name has not been released because of an ongoing investigation.

Three days before the investigation, parents received an email informing them that the booster club treasurer had resigned for personal reasons.

The president told Channel 9 that the group's books and papers have been turned over to investigators.

Deputies said it will take some time to investigate the theft.
